The Shifting Territories
Info
The Shifting Territories is a landscape shaped by sound. The project explores contemporary soundscapes, specifically the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex (Zeche Zollverein). As a former industrial site, the area has undergone a major transformation into a cultural hub and recreational area. As a result, various sound groups of both natural and human origin can be found across the site.

The installation itself features a dynamic landscape built using TouchDesigner that continuously reacts to incoming audio. Natural sounds drive the movement and behavior of the water, while human-made sounds influence the shaping of the mountains and land, creating a visual ecosystem driven entirely by the surrounding acoustic environment.

Furthermore, the influence of these sound groups on humans is being investigated. During the development of the project, self-experiments were conducted to explore the impact of various sounds on people. In the installation, this is illustrated through natural and man-made sounds entering into a symbiosis with one another.
An work in progress of the media installation was projected live for the first time in 2022 at the Visiodrom in Wuppertal.
